Description:

Cromwell and supporters formed a commonwealth known as the Protectorate. Legislative power belonged to Parliament and executive power was lodged in a council of state. The army controlled the government, and Cromwell controlled the army. In 1655, Cromwell dismissed Parliament. He also forbade sports, closed theaters, and censored the press. All Christians besides Roman Catholics were allowed to practice their faith.
