jan 1, 1863 - EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION - January 1st, 1863 - After many previous drafts, Lincoln officially published the Emancipation Proclamation. This declared all slaves in the Confederacy free. Effectively, no slave was freed. This was also a political stunt to prevent Britain from interfering with the Union's interests.
