The Ku Klux Klan was a white supremacist terrorist group that emerged during Reconstruction. It took violent steps to undermine the Republican party, hoping to maintain black economic instability and ensure white racial and economic superiority in the postwar South. The primary goal was to keep people from voting Republican (this included white people as well). The South heavily agreed with this as it meant to keep black votes from going in. This was a failure in reconstruction.
