feb 25, 1870 - Hiram Revels becomes Senator of Mississippi
Description:
He was the first African-American senator, elected in 1870 to the Mississippi seat previously occupied by Jefferson Davis. Born to free black parents in North Carolina, he worked as a minister throughout the South before entering politics. This is something that the North would agree with because it was a huge change from 5 years ago to when an African American couldn't hold a seat in congress. This was a huge step toward Reconstruction.
