dec 1, 1640 - The Root and Branch Petition
Description:
starting the growing division within the long parliament the root and branch petition was signed by 15,000 Londoners the petition demanded the end of bishops being in control of the churches around England and Scotland at this time.
this was heavily controlled by Puritans wanting the change to suit there own religious views and as most of the parliament MPs were Puritans this suited the bill.
there was three opinions towards him in parliament:
-1 group didn't want to get rid of the bishop for saying they wanted to remove the involvement of Charles sp the bishop had control not just following orders from Charles within this group would be John Pym almost leading it as he agreed with the petition but did not want to break down the hole system of churches
-2 group was almost confused as they didn't know if it was a good idea if parliament was the reason for the future breakdown of the churches they would never be truest against and they didn't know what would replace Ludianism.
-3 group disagreed upon the petition on the proposal of the churches as they saw the removal of bishops to be undermining the whole order of society these people like Hyde were supported of Charles bugging the head of state of the churches
