In September 1949, the Soviets announced that they had successfully tested an atomic bomb. American's postwar confidence was immediately rocked, and many were filled with fear. Truman would quickly allow American scientists to start working on the hydrogen bomb. This bomb would be stronger than the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan.
