Lau v. Nichols is a case that the U. S. Supreme Court on January 21, 1974 ruled (9-0) that, with and under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a California school district receiving federal funds must provide non-English-speaking students with instruction in the English language to ensure that they receive an equal education for all. This set the tone and presence for learners. Prior to this , learners was not given the opportunity for education. This law contributes to EL program by way of structure and ensuring that every student is being treated fairly.
