The Thirteen Colonies were established in England along the east coast of North America, from Maine to Georgia. Each colony was founded at different times and for different purposes. Each had their own government, a colonial legislature, which occasionally worked with other colonial legislature. Some colonies were set up purely for economic reasons, such as Virginia, and other were founded as religious colonies or refugees, such as Maryland. However, each colony had different economies, goals, and needs. They had little in common and operated independently of each other, many colonial leaders had never visited the other colonies.
