jan 1, 1895 - Grandfather Clause Enacted The Grandfather Clause was a way to supress Afrcan American votes. It basically meant that you could not vote unless your grandfather voted. In this time it was clearly directed towards those who were the descendants of slaves and whose grandfathers couldn't have possibly voted as they were enslaved.
