jan 1, 1957 - Little Rock Nine

Description:

The Little Rock Nine was made up of nine African-American students who were the first people of colour to enrol at an all-white high school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Throughout the next year, US troops were forced to remain for the nine student’s safety and the Little Rock Nine faced assault, being taunted and being spat upon by their white peers every single day

Significance: The Little Rock Nine are regarded as a “turning point for the country”, as a group of African-Americans who stood up and spoke up, sending the message that the system of segregation could not stand. They became an integral part of the fight for equal opportunity within American education by challenging public school segregation.
