The Treaty meant that Hungary became independent and split from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Additionally, they suffered territorial losses, amounting to approximately two thirds of their pre-war territory however they were also given some territorial gains. The Hungarian army was reduced to 35,000 voluntary men and Hungary also had to accept culpability for the war. Hungary went bankrupt before the reparation amount was decided on. This left the country politically, economically and socially crippled.
