The 1876 presidential election, which Rutherford B. Hayes won, end the Reconstruction. He withdrew the federal army from the south due to this promise. The result was devastating: The Reconstruction failed to solve racial problems in the south economically and morally. After the Reconstruction, African American gradually looses their rights they earned, few of them became well-off economically, while the majority suffered under discrimination.
