apr 20, 1801 - Haitian Constitution
Description:
On the 20th of April 1801 Toussaint finished writing the constitution for Saint-Domingue. The constitution would ensure freedom of all colored people. This triggered the King of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, to send French soldiers into Saint-Domingue in an effort to regain complete control of Saint-Domingue.
Napoleon wanted to reimpose slavery, as the slaves in combination with Saint-Domingue's sugar plantations were very profitable for France.
Below is a painting of the sugar plantations where the Hatian slaves worked. The painting was done in 1823.
