feb 1, 1833 - The Boston Academy of Music (1833)
Description:
The Boston Academy was incorporated in March 1833, due in large part to Woodbridge's efforts He served as recording secretary and helped publicize it, cespecially in the American Annals of Education and Instruction. One of the ob-jetives of the academy was the introduction of"vocal music into schools, by the aid of such teachers as the Academy may be able to employ, each of whom shall instruct classes alternately in a number of schools" (Wilson 1973, 29).
The original intention of the founders was to have the academy provide professional musicians to offer music instruction in the schools. The directors of the academy were about fifty businessmen and professionals, some influential in the community, who gave the academy sufficient prestige to be regarded seriously in negotiations with the School Committee of the City of Boston for the adoption of music in the schools.
