During the Age of Exploration, most European explorers sailed along the West African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope to reach Asia. Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean instead of the African continents. On August 3, 1492, Columbus and his crew set sail from Spain in three ships, then discovered the Bahamas islands and the Caribbean.
