sep 3, 1783 - Treaty of Paris
Description:
On November 12, 1782, Thomas Jefferson was appointed by Congress as a commisioner to John Adams, Ben Franklin, John Jay, and Henry Laurens in Europe to negotiate a peace treaty with Great Britain. These men not only negotiated the peace treaty, but wrote it as well , and it was named after the city in which it was negotiated and signed. The Treaty of Paris ultimately ended the American Revolution and formally recognized the United States as an independent nation.
The Articles of Confederation were written by a committee composed of one representative from each colony. John Dickinson, the Delaware representative, was the primary writer. Starting March 1st, 1781, the Articles served as the United States’ first constitution. However, they created a chaotic combination of sovereign states and a weak central government, ultimately leaving the state governments with most of the power. On March 4, 1789, the Articles of Confederation were replaced by the present-day United States Constitution.
