6 h, sep 11, 1777 y - Brandywine
Description:
This battle was meant to protect Philadelphia from the British. George Washington had thought that he'd covered all of the fords across the river, which was called Brandywine, but he was WRONG.
The enemy, led by Sir William Howe, was made up of 15,500 men. They were hidden by some mist, which was heavy, so that George's troops wouldn't see them coming.
A small number of the men attacked some of Washington's troops, at the Chadds Ford. Whilst this was happening, the rest of the large army could sneak through an unprotected ford. After a battle raging for hours (from the smaller number of troops), the rest of the army arrived, on the other side of the Continental Army. They were surrounded.
They were eventually overrun by the larger army. "Washington’s line collapsed" (“Brandywine Battle Facts and Summary”).
