It's not every day the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley are asked to lower themselves to audition. And it's pretty much, well, never, that both audition for the same role, only to find themselves blown out of the water by someone else. Step forward 25-year-old Amber Heard, who came, saw, auditioned the hell out of them for the lead role in The Rum Diary, and claimed her rightful prize of starring opposite Johnny Depp in the long-awaited Hunter S Thompson adaptation.
For Amber - until now known as "that hot girl in" (as in. "That hot girl in Zombieland", or "That hot girl inPineapple Express") - it's just another step on her A-list ascent. She also landed the lead in arguably the most controversial, and definitely the sexiest, new American show of the year. NBC’s Sixties-set The Playboy Club, which proved so hot to handle (she plays a newbie Bunny who stilettoes a customer to death in the first episode) that NBC axed it just a few episodes in.
Still. such dare-doing in her choice of roles only seems right for Amber, who is a big fan of guns (she owns a .357 Magnum) and serious, gas-guzzling pedal-power (she currentlv drives a ’68 Ford Mustang - clearly, GQ's kinda gal). "We're not doing something that’s safe." Amber previously said of the Playboy series, in a line that could sum herself up. "It's not a thing the Parents Television Council approves of.”
