oct 18, 1781 - SURRENDER OF GENERAL CORNWALLIS AT YORKTOWN

Description:

America declared its independence in 1776, but it took another five years to win freedom from the British. Until one day, october 18,1781, General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered with his 8,000 British troops in Yorktown, Virginia, bringing the American Revolution to a close. On October 19, General Cornwallis surrendered 7,087 officers and men, 900 seamen, 144 cannons, 15 galleys, a frigate and 30 transport ships.
