Despite her reservations with the film industry, Texan-born actress Heard has been making the best of it. Last year, she was became one of the few actresses to be open about her sexuality, confirming her relationship with her artist and photographer girlfriend Tasya van Ree - a subject that is strictly off limits in our interview. Although her roles have been varied, she has always opted for strong female leads - as a zombie in Zombieland and more recently in The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp - a film adaptation of a Hunter S Thompson's largely autobiographical film.

"I loved Hunter S Thompson for a long time. I've got a soft spot for true individuals. You can say many things about him, but he was definitely an individual," she said before adding jokingly. "Working with Johnny was torture. It was better than I ever imagined, which is really saying something."

Heard spends most of her time in the film wearing skin-tight, sexy costumes, which she had to be sewn into by acclaimed costume designer Colleen Atwood.
