The Declaration of Independence is a statement that would declare America's independence from Britain. As the war continued on throughout the 13 colonies, the Continental Congress continued to meet. In the summer of 1776, the Congress decided to draft a statement that would declare their independence from Britain, which was the Declaration of Independence. As great a document as the Declaration of Independence is, it did not end the American Revolutionary War. The war actually went on for another 7 years. The day it was written, however, became the Independence Day of the United States, July 4.
