The American Civil War broke out in 1861 and was fought between The Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"). One of the main causes of the war was the disagreement on slavery, and Harriet Tubman found new ways to help enslaved people during the war. She worked for the Union Army as a cook, laundress and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy.
