apr 4, 1968 - Dr. Martin Luther King jr. - Assasination
Description:
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King jr. was fatally shot and killed by James Earl Ray as he stood on the balcony of The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The night before, King gave a speech where he seemed to foreshadow his own untimely passing with these now historic words:
“I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
The news shocked the world, and many Black people saw King’s assassination as a rejection of their pursuit of equality through the nonviolent resistance he had championed.
