sep 13, 1942 - Battle for Stalingrad Begins

Description:

Stalingrad is located in Southern Russia, and in 1942, it was a large industrial city and an important goal for the German invasion: if they captured Stalingrad, it would close off Russian transport links in the South, it would help them capture oil fields in the Caucasus, and the city bearing the name of the Soviet leader (Joseph Stalin) would be extremely good propaganda for Hitler. In August, the Germans' focus on taking over Stalingrad was already draining their reserves, but they still managed to push the Soviets back in September until they only took up a small strip of the Volga while facing some of the fiercest fighting of the war. The Germans were able to intercept most of the Soviet supply crossings throughout October but the Germans were also facing fatigue, hunger, heavy losses, and the severe Russian weather. The brutal fighting between the Germans and the Red Army lasted almost five months, using German resources while they were also stationed in other battles.
