apr 6, 1941 - Germany Invades Yugoslavia and Greece

Description:

The attack on Yugoslavia was brutal, causing the death of 17,000 civilians in just one day and the destruction of about 600 of Yugoslavia's aircraft in a bombing of its airfields. As a result, the Germans successfully captured Yugoslavia and it surrendered later that month. The Axis powers divided Yugoslavia into different puppet states (such as Croatia). In Germany's invasion of Greece, it was the first major use of Airborne troops in warfare when the German Paratroopers (the Fallschrimjager) dropped in Crete. Unfortunately for Hitler, the British troops stationed there fought back well and there was an immense casualty rate for the Germans, causing Hitler to stop airborne operations completely, using the paratroopers as support instead. Despite the German casualties, they did end up capturing Greece successfully and when Greece surrendered, the Axis occupation began.
