oct 28, 1940 - Italy Invades Greece
Description:
Mussolini's decision to invade Greece was a surprise to everyone--even Hitler. Italy was already fighting a war in North Africa and occupying Albania, which took a lot of its resources and divisions, so it was wildly underprepared for another invasion. However, Mussolini believed he could easily overpower the Greek Army and he was under the impression that the Greeks had been told/bribed not to resist an Italian invasion. This was not the case since the Greeks (supported by the British) were able to push the Italians back in about a week. Mussolini faced humiliating losses and ended up losing the war, half of his fleet captured at Taranto by the British. Italy had been crippled.
