Joined Congress in the year of 1890.

The Indian national congress was split into moderates and extremists in 1905-1907 due to the swadeshi movement. He rejoined in 1916.

Got arrested in 1897 post the Case of Chapekar Brothers along with the Natu Brothers for spreading hatred and disaffection against the government. He refused to apologise.
He was once again arrested in 1908 for sedition through his paper Kesari.
The All India Home Rule League was founded by Tilak along with Annie Besant and G S Khaparde.
He initiated a no-tax campaign in
Maharashtra. He asked the famine-stricken peasants of Maharashtra to
withhold payment of land revenue if their crops had failed.
Popularised the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in 1894 and Shivaji Festival in 1895.
He was against the intercaste marriage.
