jan 1, 1838 - Parens patriae and Ex parte Crouse
Description:
Parens patriae: Latin term for "parent of the nation." The guiding principle of the juvenile court, made the court the children's guardian.
Ex parte Crouse: A case that involved the incarceration of Mary Ann Crouse at the request of her mother but without the approval of her father. The father argued his daughter deserved a jury trial, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the state had the power to intervene, no matter the reason, if it could provide the help that the family could not provide.
