jun 22, 1897 - Case of Chapekar Brothers
and Natu Brothers
1897
Description:
On 22 June 1897, brothers Damodar Hari Chapekar and Balkrishna Hari Chapekar assassinated British official W. C. Rand and his military escort Lieutenant Ayerst at Pune, Maharashtra. This was the first case of militant nationalism in India after the 1857 Revolt.
This happened when the British officers appointed by W.C. Rand on the pretext of identifying the plague victims have allegedly barged into the houses of Indians, raped women, desecrated idols and polluted holy places.
Balwantrao Ramchandra Natu and Hari Ramchandra Natu.
These brothers, with Mr. Tilak, as per a British committee of investigation on Rand’s murder (by Chapekar Brothers ), were the backbone of the group who were by common consent credited with seditious and revolutionary opinions and with great activity in the dissemination thereof.
note: While the Chapekar Brothers were hanged after trial, the Natu Brothers were deported from Poona in 1897 for association with editorials in “Poona Vaibhav” paper.
