In chapter 14, Bruno accidentally spills the beans about his new friend Shmuel. Bruno doesn't want his sister Gretel to either tell on him, or steal his friend, so he makes up a lie. Bruno tells Gretel that he has an imaginary friend to protect Shmuel. This shows that Bruno grows smarter about what is going on, and knows that Shmuel will be punished if their friendship is exposed. He explains the situation of his imaginary friend, and he then realizes how bad Shmuel's situation is. This is important because Bruno takes a walk in Shmuel's shoes and he comes to an understanding about his friend.
