DEVELOPMENT
Description:
Johnny Depp is to team up with Julian Schnabel for an adaptation of historical literary thriller In the Hand of Dante.
The actor's production company Infinitum Nihil bought the rights to Nick Tosches's book about Dante Aligiheri's The Divine Comedy in 2008.
Depp is not expected to start developing the film with Schnabel for another few years.
Schnabel, who directed the controversial Miral, said: It belongs to Johnny, but I'm not going to make it for a couple of years. We're gonna work on writing it, developing it. We didn't sign anything. It's just something Johnny asked me to read and I think it's a great book.
Depp is planning to play the character of Nick Tosches, a rare books expert and scholar determined to find out whether a newly-discovered manuscript sold as an original work from Dante is the real thing.
The attached video is of Johnny reading from the book in 2002 as part of a planned audiobook deal. Johnny apparently completed several chapters before running out of time and had to return to the Finding Neverland set. The success of the book then prompted the literary agents to pull out of the audiobook deal so the project has never been completed.
Julian Schnabel directed Johnny in Before Night Falls (2000) and took the attached photo of Johnny in 1999.
