jul 14, 1789 - Start of the French Revolution
Description:
Now known as Bastille day, many people consider this the start of the French Revolution. Rioters stormed the Bastille in an attempt to obtain weapons and gunpowder. The governor of Bastille Bernard-René de Launay had at first promised not to harm the revolutionists, but when they climbed over the walls and let the rest of the mob in, he had no choice but to allow his men to open fire. The angry crowd eventually dismantled the Bastille, and killed or imprisoned most of the soldiers.
