Pharmacist John Pemberton registered his coca-wine "nerve tonic" at the US patent office, which effectively marks the official beginning of Coca-Cola. One of the key ingredients in his new medicine was the stimulant drug cocaine, from the coca plant. The other was caffeine from kola nuts. The drink became popular and started being distributed widely, but the cocaine content of coca-cola started becoming an issue, so it was removed from Coca-Cola products in 1903.Added to timeline:
