Description:

Truman became president in 1945. He believed that the communists should be resisted by tough policies.

In 1945 when the communists tried to overthrow the monarchy in Greece and Britain, they did not have the financial resources to keep the king in power and was struggling. Britain devided to ask the US for help.

Truman made a speech in 1946, "offering help to any country whose government was under threat from armed minorities or by outside pressure". This was known as the Truman Doctrine which was aimed against communism.

It became clear that the US had become commmitted to contain communism and was wiling to spend large sums of money, arms and supplies all over the world to contain communism.
This intensified feelings between East and West.
