Description:
Problems arose two weeks before opening night when the two hundred fifty-seat Marymount Manhatten Theatre, part of a Catholic Women’s school, prohibited the company from performing one of the dances scheduled. For the Mother Superior of Marymount, homosexuality was the controversial issue, not nudity. Rather than change the program, the company chose to find another theatre, obtaining the nine hundred ninety-four-seat theatre of Manhattan School of Music.
The move generated a great deal of publicity that worked for the good fortune of the company, with sold out performances and countless reviews. The change in plans necessitated dropping one premiere, DANCE COLLAGE, a ninety-minute work choreographed by the twelve dancers. The first and third night’s program was the same; THERE IS A TIME, SESSION, and MY BROTHER’S KEEPER. The second night’s program included the cause of the scandal, LOST AND OLD RIVERS, as well as the premiere of Linda Smith’s A PIECE FOR EVAN, NOCTURNE and BETWEEN ME AND OTHER PEOPLE.
