British Lt Col Banastetr Tarleton while pursuing Maj John James Patriot force. James sent a milita member to spy on Tarleton, who was discovered but escaped. Tarleton learned that James force was much larger so he by-passed James in route to the Salem community. Along the way, he burned the home and all buildings of Patriot Capt William Henry Mouzon II
