jun 11, 1780 - Skirmish at Fishing Creek Church

Description:

Loyalist Capt. Christian Hucks rode to the Fishing Creek Church on a Sunday expecting to find the pastor Rev. John Simpson and his congregation. The Pastor and most of the congregation had departed to join Capt. John McClure’s militia. Along the way, Capt. Hucks' men shot and killed William Strong as he walked along the road reading his bible. Mrs. Simpson, the pastor’s wife, heard the shooting of Strong and escape with her four children hiding in an orchard. Hucks' men plundered the home and burned it to the ground. Some accounts also say Huck’s burned the church building.
