Description:

Patriot Col William Washington learned British commander-in-chief Sir Henry Clinton was to meet Gen James Patterson at Loyalist Governer John Rutledge's Stono Plantation. Sir Henry Clinton returned to his headquarters in Charles Town the day prior to Col Washington arrival at Stono Plantation. Col Washington did however capture British Inspector General, Dr Ludwig Schmidt of the Hospital Corps, and Lt Col John Hamilton, commander of the North Carolina Loyalist Regiment within one hundred yards of the British Army. British Col Banistare Tarelton attempted to retake the British prisoners resulting in a skirmish and British defeat at Rantowles Bridge the same day.
