may 21, 1962 - Effect: This act gave the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the option to enroll and vote in federal elections, although enrolment was not compulsory. Shortly after this, Western Australia and Northern Territory gave Aboriginal people the right to vote in the state elections. The act was passed in 1965.
