dec 14, 1780 - Skirmish at Singleton's Mill
Description:
Early morning after the skirmish at Halfway Swamp, Maj McLeRoth had his men slip away during night towards Singleton's Mill and on to Camden. When Brig Gen Francis Marion learned the British had departed, he sent Maj John James mounted infantry on his fastest horses to seize the Singleton's Mill before McLeRoth's arrival. James beat McLeRoth and fired one volley into his advance guard. McLeRoth then observed the Patriots remount and ride from the mill. After firing one volley, the Patriots learned the Singleton family all had smallpox. The British continued their march to Camden.
