Description:
First major naval battle of the Revolutionary War – June 28, 1776. Gen. Clinton and Admiral Parker's unsuccessful attempt to sail into Charles Town harbor to land force on Long Island (now Isle of Palms, S. C.) and naval attack on Charleston Harbor defenses on Sullivan's Island. The key to this critical American victory was a hastily constructed palmetto fort on the south end of Sullivan's Island. This structure was later named Fort Moultrie.
