Two hundred Patriots under the joint command of Col. Isaac Shelby (NC), Col. Elijah Clarke (GA), and Col. James Williams (SC) prepared to raid the Loyalist camp at Musgrove’s Mill on the Enoree River. The Patriots learned the British were reinforced now double the Patriot’s size. Unable to move without resting their horses, the Patriots made a stand on a ridge top across the road leading to Musgrove’s Mill. Capt Shadrach Inman with 20 Patriots crossed the Enoree engaging the Loyalist the feigning confusion retreated back across the river toward the ambush site. After the Loyalist nearly overwhelmed the Patriot line with a bayonet charge, the Patriot reserve of “Overmountain Men” rushed into the fight and a number of Loyalist officer were killed. This broke the Loyalist will to fight with 63 killed, unknown number wounded and 70 taken prisoner. The Patriots had 12 wounded and four killed, one of which was Capt. Inman, leader of the initial cross river assault.
