Patriot Capt Peter Youngblood looking for Loyalist Col Daniel McGirth learned a group of Tories were at house not far from Youngblood's location. The Tories were commanded by George Clayton whom Youngblood had raised from a boy. The house was surrounded, the Tories surprised fled leaving nine dead on the grounds. Clayton's and his fast horse became mired in the mud. Youngblood spoke to him but Clayton continued to load his gun. He refused to stop and was shot and killed by the Patriots.
