apr 23, 1781 - Raid on Mobley's Settlement (Mobley or Gibson's Meetinghouse)
Description:
Brigadier General Thomas Sumter gained retaliation for Capt. John Coffin's April 9th raid of the Waxhaws Church by sending men to burn and kill Loyalists in the Mobley and Sandy Run settlements. The settlements were Loyalist strongholds and the intent was to remove the threat to the local Patriot community. Mobley's Meetinghouse was in northwestern Fairfield County. This had been the site of a previous Patriot militia raid on the Loyalist lead by Capt. John McClure in Jun of 1780 to recover plunder and disperse the Loyalist.
