Description:
Cornet Thomas Merritt, Queen's Rangers dragoons escorted some negroes to neighboring plantations to recover cattle that escaped from Georgetown. Merritt's Rangers engaged a group of Patriots and after being unable to retreat, charged several times. When the second horse was shot out from under him Merritt was knocked unconcious. One Ranger killed and four wounded, the rest fled into the woods. Merritt was left for dead after taking his boots, helment, and weapons.
