Lt Col Hawthorne had been wounded by a British patrol and was being escorted to Fergus's Crossroads to recover. They encoutered another British patrol and his escort fled except his brother-in-law Capt Thomas Neal, Jr. They chose to fight to the death and defeated the British patrol.
