Description:
Patriot Capt James Doharty took command of Fort Lyttleton near Beaufort but lived on Bear Island. His neighbor Richard Pendarvis, a hard core Tory, threathen to kill Doharty. Doharty learned Pendarvis was coming to his home to kill him that evening. He gathered three nephew;s, Lt John, William Leacroft and Capt John Talbird to help ambush Pendravis. They waited to late to set the ambush and the Tories rode up to his front door shooting him dead. Tories hung one of his nephews but he refused to talk so they let him live and the other escaped.
