jan 1, 1650 - Robert de Nobili (1577 - 1656), Italian Jesuit missionary noted for fervor and intolerance, arrives in Madurai, declares himself a brahmin, dresses like a Hindu monk. He is credited with composing a Veda-like Sanskrit scripture extolling Jesus. Two yoga classics, Siva Samhita and Gheranda Samhita, are written.
