I worked so hard to land even the smallest roles, and nothing I've ever worked on, big or small, is something that I take for granted.

JEZ: You just worked on a film adaptation of
Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary with
Johnny Depp. Tell me about that experience.

AH: I'm a huge fan of Hunter S. Thompson
I think he is a genius, and I respect him and
his work so much, and in different times in
my life, I have been incredibly moved and
inspired by his way of approaching reality.
I was thrilled when I found out that this team
was working together again, and by that I
mean something based off Hunter S. Thompson's work and Johnny Depp, who was a personal friend [of Thompson's] and a man who does his work an incredible amount of justice and also is a brilliant actor. I was really
excited to see that this was happening in that
combination again, and I sought out the part,
and I went through a fairly rigorous process
and I ended up getting the part, and it was the best film experience I have ever had. I learned a lot, and it was incredibly eye-opening to work on a project like this, because it is art in film, with the best possible team and crew you could ask for. Everything was right. Everything in the right place and the right time and I took full advantage of it and hopefully it will turn out as beautiful as everyone believes it to be

JEZ: Did you find it intimidating in any
way working with Depp when he was a personal friend of Thompson's?

AH: You have to look at in the sense that he is a coworker, and the better he is, the better I am going to be. The more connected he is the more he can help me connect, and truly that is how it worked. Everything worked out beautifully, because he is really a great person. He is easy to be around, the most genuine individual you'd ever met. And the fact that he's also Johnny Depp and had this amazing relationship with the original author was just the icing on the cake. He made it so easy to do this project justice, he made it so easy to understand where this material was coming from and where it was going, and for that, the film, and everyone in it, is going to be so much better. So it's incredible to work with someone that good and someone as connected to the project, and, in that sense I'm honoured and so lucky
