1. He contributed to the understanding of the atom because he discovered the neutron, found in the atom.
2. An important experiment he conducted was that he bombarded the element Beryllium with alpha particles, which were from the natural radioactive decay of Polonium. From there, the uncharged particle was found to be the same weight of a proton.
